Operating engineers are found on any project using construction equipment, working as heavy equipment mechanics. An operating engineer operates construction equipment that assists other tradesmen in the construction of roads, bridges, dams, building both large and small and many other structures. The work of an operating engineer is divided into two general classifications:
Operating Equipment – Used in construction such as dozers, graders, backhoes and cranes.
Repairing and Earth Moving Equipment – Used in building of roads, bridges, pipelines, dams and large buildings.
Requirements for Journeyman Membership
To qualify as a journeyman, an applicant must have:

a minimum of five (5) years of verifiable work experience operating equipment or four (4) years of apprenticeship training, including on-the-job, field and classroom training;

an interest in working outdoors as well as a good work ethic since you will be working on expensive and potentially dangerous equipment;

the ability to work “regular” construction hours of 6:00 or 8:00 am to 5:00 or 6:00 pm, as well as overtime and short notice or swing shifts on some projects;

reliable transportation
How do I prepare for the trade?
The following will be helpful:
- Good math skills
- Be able to pass a drug test
- Good reading ability
- Mechanical ability
- Welding
How do I qualify?
The following are necessary:
- At least 18 years of age by May 1st of the year you apply
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Have a driver’s license and be capable of passing the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) test
- Have dependable transportation
- Be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Pass a drug test
