Mission Statement
To train our members to the highest of standards and enable them to be
exemplary craftsmen and citizens for the benefit of their livelihood, the
union, the industry and the United States of America and Canada.
Skill
Training
As a Union Apprentice you’ll be enrolled in a
state-of-the-art program of technical training designed to teach you the
superior skills you’ll need in your new career. You will go to work for a
Union Contractor and receive a good wage, which will increase as you
accomplish you training program. Over time you will become eligible for
medical benefits and a pension plan.
Each year throughout your Apprenticeship
Training you will receive a minimum of 144 hours of combined classroom and
shop instruction. Over the course of your Apprenticeship you will also
receive on-the-job training designed to educate you in all the theories and
practices of the Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ crafts. Plus, while on the
job, you’ll earn a negotiated percentage of the journey workers’ area hourly
wage rate, increasing progressively to 100% by graduation.
Training for the Future
As the OPCMIA prepares for the future, its leadership
is squarely focused on increasing membership through organizing
plasterers, cement masons and shop hands. Officers, members, and
staff of the OPCMIA are upgrading existing training programs and
establishing new ones throughout the United States and Canada. The goal
is to provide state-of-the-art journey person upgrading and modern
Apprenticeship Program. “The OPCMIA is doing everything possible
to meet the demands of our membership and our industry as we strive to
provide the best trained workers available anywhere”, says General
President John J. Dougheryty.
Remember, if someone tries to tell you that Unions are bad for you- ask
yourself, who are they trying to protect?
Trades by Definition
Plasterer work includes but is not limited to:
- All types of Plastering - Exterior Insulated Finishing System Application (EIFS) - including the
installation of the insulation board whether it is stuck or fastened with
mechanical fasteners - Restoration Work - Acoustical Tile Application - Artificial Marble Work - Fireproofing Application - Epoxy Coating Applications - Sculpturing - Swimming Pool Interior Application - Wallboard Taper and Joiner/Drywall Application/ Level 5 Drywall
Skimcoating - Shop Hands Build Illusions and Props for the Motion Picture Industry - Modern Veneer and Hardcoat Applications - Cornice and Ornamental Plastering
Cement Mason work includes but is not limited to:
- Concrete Finishing and Buildings, Highways,
Sidewalks, Curbs and Gutters
- Concrete Saw and Scoring Machine Operation
- Floor Hardeners, Sealers and Curing Application
- Gunite Operation
- Laser Screed Operation
- Installing Seamless Flooring (Epoxy)
- Sand Blasting and Bush Hammering
- Restoration Work (Concrete Repair)
- Waterproofing and Caulking
- Form Setting
- Grouting
- Epoxy Coating Application
- Decorative Concrete Stenciled, Stamped and Stained
